Expats vital for Bangladesh’s economy, says info minister

Information and Broadcasting Minister Zahir Uddin Swapan said Bangladeshi expatriates are a valuable asset to the country.

Their knowledge, talent, wisdom, and hard work are strengthening the national economy, he added.

He called upon Bangladeshi expatriates to come forward and contribute more to the country’s development in the future.

The minister made these remarks on Sunday morning at his office in the ministry when Councillor Shibley Alam, Civic Mayor of Tameside Council in Manchester, England, paid a courtesy call on him.

He also said that England is the cradle of democracy. Bangladeshis living there for a long time are not only contributing economically but also are playing a positive role in advancing democracy in Bangladesh.

During the meeting, Councillor Shibley Alam highly praised women’s empowerment in Bangladesh. She expressed hope that Bangladeshi women will move further ahead in various sectors, including economic development and in social and state affairs.

She also expressed interest in working for the health and rights of Bangladeshi women. Both sides expressed optimism about further strengthening the relationship between Bangladesh and the United Kingdom.
