A court in Dhaka on Friday placed former reserved-seat MP for Nilphamari-3 Ashika Sultana on a three-day remand in a case filed under the Anti-Terrorism Act.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Manzurul Islam passed the order in the afternoon after hearing a remand petition submitted by the investigating officer, court sources said.
The investigating officer, Sub-Inspector Al Mamun Hossain of Mirpur Model Police Station, had sought a seven-day remand for interrogation.
Sub-Inspector Rafiqul Islam of the prosecution division confirmed the matter.
Earlier on Thursday night, police arrested Ashika Sultana from the Mirpur-11 area around 11:50pm.
During the hearing, state counsel Azizul Haque Didar supported the remand prayer, while defence lawyer Jahangir Alam opposed it.
According to the case statement, on 19 June, a group of 40 to 50 Awami League and Chhatra League activists brought out a procession near the BATA showroom adjacent to Apex showroom in Mirpur-1.
Police said the participants fled the scene, leaving behind banners and festoons after noticing law enforcement presence.
Police further said video footage showed the procession was held marking the 77th founding anniversary of the Awami League.
In the case filed by police, Ashika Sultana was shown as a suspect.
In the remand prayer, investigators claimed intelligence inputs suggested her involvement in the incident and alleged she was a financier of the Awami League.
Investigators said her remand was necessary to uncover the motive behind the procession, identify absconding participants, and determine those who organised and led the gathering.
