A Dhaka court has placed former food minister Advocate Qamrul Islam on a 5-day remand and shown former member of the parliament of Dhaka-7 constituency Mohammad Solaiman Selim arrested in connection with the murder of jute trader Md Monir during the July mass uprising in Chankharpul in the capital.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Sadequr Rahman passed this order on Wednesday after the investigating officer and Shahbagh Police Station’s sub-inspector, Mainul Islam Khan Pulak, produced Qamrul Islam before the court and applied for a 10-day remand.
Defense lawyer Aftab Mahmud Chowdhury opposed the remand. After hearing both sides, the judge placed Qamrul Islam on a 5-day remand.
According to the case documents, on August 5 last year, during the July movement, jute trader Md Monir participated in the movement with students and the public in the Chankharpul area of Shahbagh police station.
He was shot and died on the spot in the afternoon. On March 14, wife of the deceased, Rozina Akhter, filed a case with the Shahbagh police station accusing 351 named people and 500 unknown individuals.
Qamrul Islam is the 7th accused in the case. On November 18 last year, the detectives arrested him from Uttara-12 sector of the capital. Since then, he has been in jail after being remanded several times.
In addition, the court has granted a 4-day remand to 3 others, including former Patuakhali Municipality Mayor Mohiuddin Ahmed, Mymensingh District Awami League adviser, and former Gafargaon Municipality Mayor Kaiser Ahmed, in cases filed in various police stations in the capital.
