A Dhaka court has placed three individuals, including former Jubo Dal leader Moin Uddin, on a 3-day remand in a case filed over demands for Tk5 lakh as extortion at a kidney hospital in the capital’s Shyamoli area.
The order was issued on Tuesday afternoon by the court of Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Jamshed Alam after a hearing. The other two accused sent to remand are MB Swapan Kazi and Md. Shaon Hossain.
Earlier, the investigating officer had produced the accused in court and sought a 7-day remand, stating that evidence had been found regarding their involvement in the incident and that interrogation was necessary to uncover the full mystery.
According to the case statement, Moin and his associates had been demanding Tk5 lakh for a long time from the complainant, Abu Hanif, Operation Theatre In-charge of the Centre for Kidney Diseases and Urology (CKD) Hospital. When he expressed inability to pay, the accused threatened him with various forms of intimidation.
On the morning of April 10, the accused gathered in front of the complainant’s house on Shyamoli’s 3 Number Road and demanded the money from his wife. When she refused, they began behaving recklessly, the statement added.
Later, about 50-60 people assembled in front of the hospital, chanted slogans, swore, and attempted to create chaos. They even shouted threatening slogans at hospital owner Md Kamrul Islam and tried to disrupt the emergency department, raising concerns about the hospital’s normal environment.
The case was filed on 11 April at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station, naming Moin Uddin as the main accused and 7-8 others as unidentified. On 13 April, four of Moin’s associates were arrested and placed on a 4-day remand. Moin himself was arrested the same day from Narail’s Kalia Thana area.
Defence lawyers argued for bail seeking cancellation of the remand, while the state opposed the application. After hearing both sides, the court ordered a 3-day remand for each of the three accused.
