A Dhaka court on Sunday placed former Jamalpur-1 lawmaker Md Noor Mohammad on a three-day remand in a case filed under the Anti-Terrorism Act with Tejgaon Police Station.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Ariful Islam passed the order after police sought a seven-day remand for the former MP.

Sub-Inspector Mohammad Sohel Sarkar of Tejgaon Police Station, the investigating officer in the case, produced Noor Mohammad before the court following his arrest by the Detective Branch (DB) police in Gulshan on Saturday night.

Defence counsel Kamrul Hossain confirmed the arrest and, along with lawyers Abdur Rahim and Mahbub Hossain, opposed the remand plea and sought bail for the accused. The prosecution opposed the bail petition, after which the court granted a three-day remand.

According to the case statement, Noor Mohammad allegedly led a procession of 30 to 35 people near Mohakhali Bus Terminal at around 9:45am on 18 June. Police alleged the participants, described in the case as members of a banned organisation, carried sticks and banners bearing provocative slogans and chanted anti-state slogans with the intention of creating instability and threatening public safety.

The case also alleges that cocktails were exploded during the procession to create panic among the public. Police later recovered unexploded cocktails, mobile phones and what they described as provocative materials from the scene.

In the remand application, the investigating officer told the court that evidence of Noor Mohammad’s alleged involvement had emerged following his arrest.

The application further claimed that he was an active member of the banned Awami League and argued that custodial interrogation was necessary to ensure a proper investigation and to identify and arrest other suspects linked to the case.
