Four individuals, including former Biman Bangladesh Airlines MD and CEO Shafiqur Rahman and his wife Bithi, have been placed on remand in a case over the abuse of an 11-year-old child domestic worker.
Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Md Zakir Hossain issued the remand order on Tuesday after hearing arguments from both sides.
Safiqur Rahman was remanded for five days, while his wife Bethi received seven days.
The two housemaids, Rupali Khatun and Mosammat Sufia Begum, were granted five and six days of remand respectively.
The accused were produced before the court around 2:45pm, and the hearing began at 3:13pm. Lawyers for the accused sought bail and requested cancellation of the remand, but the victim’s lawyers opposed the plea.
After the hearing, the court approved the remand.
Earlier, on Sunday, the investigation officer Assistant Sub-Inspector Robel Mia of Uttara West Police Stations had sought seven days’ remand for each accused.
Metropolitan Magistrate Israt Jahan had set Tuesday for the remand hearing.
The four were arrested in the early hours of 2 February from a residence in Sector 9, Uttara. They were later sent to jail in connection with the case.
The alleged victim, an 11-year-old domestic worker, accused the four of torture. Her father, Golam Mostaf, later filed the case against them.
Following the incident, the government removed Safiqur Rahman from his position at Biman.
