A video showing a man being dropped off in a white plastic sack outside the gate of an institution in Dhaka’s Pallabi has gone viral on social media.
Police said a preliminary investigation has revealed different information.
According to police, the man seen in the video is Nazrul Islam, 50. He has worked as a security guard for about 15–16 years at the Salvation Army’s tuberculosis and leprosy clinic in Block‑A, Pallabi. His monthly salary is Tk17,000.
Nazrul reported for duty as night guard at 10pm on 10 September. The following morning, around 6am, replacement guard Daniel Sarkar arrived but could not find him and informed project manager Bose Elvin Othi. CCTV footage was then reviewed.
The footage shows that at 4:47am on 11 September, an unidentified man left Nazrul at the clinic gate inside a white plastic sack. Around 5:45am, Nazrul himself came out of the sack and sat near the gate for a short while. He then left the spot in a rickshaw with the unidentified man.
Police said a review of the CCTV footage showed no signs of coercion in the incident.
In the initial inquiry, Nazrul’s son, Md Meraj, told police that his father had recently taken a bank loan of Tk300,000. Nazrul has two wives living in the village. Police suspect he may have gone into hiding for personal reasons without informing his family.
However, Nazrul’s current whereabouts and the exact reason for him being brought there in a sack remain unclear. The deputy commissioner of Mirpur Division said inquiries into the matter are ongoing.
