Cameron Green has blamed an administrative mistake by his manager for being listed as a batter rather than an all-rounder in the IPL auction, clarifying two days before Tuesday’s mini auction that he is fully fit and prepared to bowl.
The Australia international returned to international cricket in June as a specialist batter following back surgery, but has bowled during the ongoing Ashes series and is currently playing as an all-rounder. Despite that, Green appeared in the auction list under the batter category, a classification that placed him among the first six players to be presented at the auction.
Green is in the highest base price bracket of 2 crore rupees and is one of the most discussed players ahead of the mini auction. He has previously represented Mumbai Indians and Royal Challengers Bengaluru, although he missed the most recent IPL season because of his back surgery.
Speaking to reporters ahead of Ashes preparations on Sunday, Green said the mix-up was not deliberate. “I don’t know if my manager will like hearing this, but it was his mistake,” Green said. “He didn’t mean batter, I think he accidentally ticked the wrong box. The way it has all happened is quite funny, but the mistake was definitely from his side. I am well prepared to bowl.”
Because of the registration error, Green was entered into the batter category rather than the all-rounders list, something he said would not have happened had the form been completed correctly. The IPL has not indicated whether any changes will be made to his classification ahead of the auction.
Green said he plans to watch the auction unfold. “I will definitely be watching with a few others. It is always fun to watch. It’s a bit like a lottery, seeing which team you end up with and who might be in your team,” he said.
Green has taken 68 wickets in international cricket and 138 wickets overall, underlining his credentials as an all-rounder despite the administrative error that shaped his auction listing.
