Egypt made history on Monday by beating New Zealand 3-1 to claim their first ever FIFA World Cup victory.
The Pharaohs came from behind at BC Place in Vancouver and moved to the top of Group G with one match left to play.
New Zealand made the brighter start and took the lead in the 15th minute. Finn Surman rose highest to head home from Tim Payne’s delivery and give the All Whites a 1-0 advantage.
Egypt struggled to create clear chances in the first half and went into the break trailing. However, they returned as a different side after halftime.
Mostafa Zico brought Egypt level in the 58th minute. Mohamed Hany provided the cross and Zico powered a header into the net to make it 1-1.
Nine minutes later, Mohamed Salah put Egypt in front. Zico turned provider this time as Salah finished the move to score a crucial goal.
Egypt completed the comeback in the 82nd minute. Salah delivered a corner and substitute Trezeguet headed home to seal a famous victory.
New Zealand pushed for a response late in the match, but Egypt goalkeeper Mostafa Shobier made important saves to protect the lead.
The win ended a long wait for Egypt, who had never won a World Cup match despite making several appearances at the tournament. The result also puts them in a strong position to reach the knockout stage.
Egypt now lead Group G and will face Iran in their final group match. New Zealand remain in contention but must beat Belgium to keep their hopes alive.
