The Appellate Division’s chamber court has stayed a High Court order granting bail to Shimul Bhuiya, accused in a case over abduction and killing of former Awami League MP Anwarul Azim Anar in West Bengal, India.
Justice Md Rezaul Haque’s chamber court issued the order on Sunday.
Earlier, on 8 June, the High Court had granted bail to Shimul Bhuiya, a once-notorious criminal from Khulna, who was in jail after giving a confessional statement in the case.
Anar was killed, on 13 May 2024, in a flat in Kolkata’s New Town area. On 22 May, his daughter Mumtarin Ferdous Doreen filed a case with Dhaka’s Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station.
In that case, former extremist leader Amanullah Saeed alias Shimul Bhuiya alias Shihab alias Fazal Mohammad Bhuiya gave a confessional statement under Section 164 on 5 June 2024, and was later sent to jail.
Shimul told the court he was a top leader of the banned Purbo Banglar Communist Party, operating in Khulna, Jhenaidah, Jashore, and other southern districts.
He said he had a long-standing feud with MP Anar, while the prime planner Akhtaruzzaman Shahin also had business disputes with Anar. Shimul and Shahin had been planning Anar’s murder for a long time.
