The Election Commission (EC) has implemented significant changes to the procedures for correcting National Identity Cards (NIDs).
According to an office order issued by National ID Registration Wing on Sunday, the central processing of application categories Ka-1, Ka, Kha-1, Kha, Ga-1, and Ga at Electoral Training Institute building has been suspended until further notice.
Despite these suspensions, the commission confirmed that Gha category applications, which are settled at director general level, will continue to be processed under the previous regulations.
The EC has redistributed the responsibility for settling the suspended categories to field-level officials to ensure continued service.
Under the new arrangement, assistant upazila or thana election officers are responsible for Ka-1 applications, while upazila or thana election officers will handle Ka category corrections.
Responsibility for Kha-1 category has been assigned to additional district election officers, whereas senior district or district election officers will manage Kha category applications.
For the Ga-1 and Ga categories, authorities have been delegated to additional regional election officers and regional election officers, respectively.
The order further specifies that applications available for online submission will no longer be accepted in hardcopy format. These instructions, issued with the approval of appropriate authorities, are to take immediate effect.
The copies of directive have been forwarded to six relevant departments, including those of the additional secretary and director general of Election Commission. The commission stated that it would issue subsequent instructions regarding the resumption of central services for the six suspended categories.
