The Bangladesh Election Commission inaugurated a media centre on Tuesday to assist journalists covering the 13th national parliamentary election and referendum.
The centre, set up at Hotel InterContinental Dhaka, will provide logistical support and information to both local and foreign media.
Senior Secretary of the Election Commission Akhtar Ahmed said the commission stands ready to support journalists at all times.
“Through mutual cooperation, we will ensure accurate reporting of the upcoming referendum and parliamentary election,” he said at the inauguration ceremony.
A help desk has also been established at the airport for foreign journalists.
Akhtar Ahmed highlighted the challenges faced in updating voter lists and registering new political parties. “All preparations for voting have been completed. We are fully ready for a free and fair election. Journalists must report accurate information and prevent the spread of misinformation. The announcement of results will not be unnecessarily delayed,” he said.
Information and Broadcasting Secretary Mahbuba Farzana, serving as the ceremony’s chairperson, emphasised the importance of responsible journalism.
“This election reflects the hopes and aspirations of the nation. We must all work to ensure a transparent and credible process. Journalists from 19 countries are already here. The media centre will provide them with all necessary information and support,” she said.
Foreign Affairs Secretary Asad Alam Siam stressed the critical role of both local and international media in reporting election developments.
“Around 540 foreign observers and journalists will cover the elections, including representatives from election commissions, international organisations, observer missions, and global media outlets. Our ministry has always cooperated with the international community to help them understand Bangladesh’s democratic processes,” he said.
Officials from the Election Commission, Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, and Foreign Ministry, along with journalists from various media outlets, attended the event.
