The Election Commission (EC) on Thursday issued a stern warning against taking possession of voters’ National Identity Cards (NIDs) ahead of the upcoming general election scheduled for 12 February.
In a statement released by EC Public Relations Director Ruhul Amin Mallik, the commission said reports have surfaced of individuals collecting voters’ personal information and NIDs under the guise of election campaigning.
Such activities are strictly prohibited under the National Identity Registration Act, 2010, which forbids carrying, transferring, or holding someone else’s NID.
The EC also cited Rule 4 of the ‘Conduct of Political Parties and Candidates in Parliamentary Elections, 2025,’ which bars political parties, candidates, or their representatives from offering or promising cash, donations, or gifts to voters, groups, or organisations within election areas.
Violations of these rules are considered punishable offenses.
The commission urged all citizens and organisations to refrain from such activities to ensure a free and fair election process.
Recently, the BNP filed a complaint alleging that Jamaat-e-Islami had collected voter NIDs under the pretext of campaigning.
