The Election Commission (EC) has upheld the candidacy of BNP candidate Aslam Chowdhury for the Chattogram-4 constituency but has cancelled the candidacy of Sarwar Alamgir for Chattogram-2 constituency.

The commission delivered the verdict on Sunday after concluding the appeal hearings at the Election Commission office in the capital’s Agargaon.

While the returning officer had declared Aslam Chowdhury’s nomination paper valid, three appeals were filed against him on allegations of which claimed he was a loan defaulter. Trust Bank, Bank Asia, and Jamaat’s candidate for the same seat, Yusuf Sohail, had filed the appeals.

After the appeal hearings, the EC issued a verdict upholding the returning officer’s decision which had declared his nomination paper valid.

On the other hand, after Sarwar Alamgir was also declared valid by the returning officer, an appeal was filed by Jamaat-e-Islami candidate Md Nurul Amin based on similar allegations of loan default.

After the hearing, the Election Commission cancelled his candidacy. If Sarwar wishes to contest in the election, he must now approach the High Court to overturn the EC’s verdict.
