Eastern University observed the Martyrs’ Day and International Mother Language Day on Saturday with due respect and solemnity.
The day’s programmes commenced with a procession on the university campus, followed by the laying of floral wreaths at the Shaheed Minar situated on the campus premises. Faculty members, students, and university officials gathered at the monument to pay tribute to the language martyrs.
Vice Chancellor Professor Dr Farid A Sobhani addressed the programme as the president, where he highlighted the significance of the Language Movement and the rich heritage of the Bangla language and culture.
Other speakers included Dr Abul Basher Khan, Registrar; Dr Md Mahfuzur Rahman, Dean of the School of Engineering and Technology; Dr Md. Abdullah Al Humayun, Head of the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering; and Md. Rofiussan, Head of the Department of English.
The speakers emphasised the global importance of International Mother Language Day, the cultural value of Bangla, and the necessity of promoting linguistic diversity and unity. They further discussed the historical achievements gained through the supreme sacrifices of the language martyrs.
Earlier, the welcome speech was delivered by the Convener of the programme, Dr Abu Bin Ihsan, Head of the Department of Pharmacy. The event was conducted by KM Monirul Islam, Deputy Director of Student Affairs and Placement.
The observance concluded with a special prayer seeking eternal peace for the departed souls of the martyrs, conducted by Md Omar Faruk, Lecturer of the Department of Law.
