A Dhaka court has rejected the bail plea of Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (Ducsu) Vice-President candidate Jalal Ahmed, popularly known as “Jwalamoyi Jalal,” in a case filed over the alleged attempted murder of his roommate.
On Tuesday, Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Sefatullah passed the order after a hearing. Jalal’s lawyer Rafiqul Islam moved the bail petition, which was opposed by Assistant Public Prosecutor Syed Golam Mortoza. After hearing both sides, the court rejected the plea.
Earlier, on August 26, another Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate, Md Minhajur Rahman, had sent Jalal to jail. The case was lodged following an incident in the early hours of August 25, when Jalal allegedly assaulted his roommate, Md Robiul Haque, with a chair and a broken fluorescent tube light.
According to the case statement, filed by Haji Muhammad Mohsin Hall Provost Md Sirajul Islam on behalf of the university authorities at Shahbagh Police Station, Robiul, a student of the Political Science Department (2018–19 session), was asleep in his room around midnight when Jalal entered, switched on the light, and dragged a chair noisily.
When Robiul requested him to keep quiet as he needed to study early in the morning at the library, Jalal allegedly became enraged and began arguing. At one stage, Jalal attempted to strike Robiul’s head with a wooden chair “with intent to kill.” Although Robiul blocked the blow with his hands, the chair hit his forehead, causing injury.
The complaint further states that Jalal then picked up an old tube light and attempted to hit Robiul on the head again. Robiul dodged, but the blow landed on the left side of his chest, causing cuts as the tube shattered. Jalal allegedly used the broken shards to stab at him, injuring Robiul’s left hand as he tried to defend himself.
University authorities subsequently filed an attempted murder case against Jalal, leading to his arrest and continued detention.
