A burglary has occurred at the house of notorious Nasir Chowdhury, chairman of Simla-Rokonpur Union Parishad in Kaliaganj upazila, Jhenaidah, and former general secretary of the Upazila Deed Writers’ Association.
However, police have not found any family members to file a complaint regarding the matter. The burglarly took place at on Tuesday night at the house located next to Ayesha Khatun School in Kaliaganj town. Neighbors reported that the thieves broke the collapsible gate of the house and entered the house.
Since August 5, 2024, no one from Nasir’s family has been living in the house. It has remained abandoned since then. Nasir Chowdhury and the rest of his family went into hiding once the Awami League government was ousted during last year’s July Uprising. Nasir Uddin himself currently faces cases related to arson, murder, and corruption.
Nasir Chowdhury is the son of Shamsher Chowdhury from Pukuria village in the upazila. At one time, he used to sell coconuts in front of the Kaliaganj Sub-Registry Office. His education goes up to the eighth grade.
While selling coconuts, he developed friendships with members of the Deed Writers’ Association at the Sub-Registry Office, starting work as an assistant to a deed writer. Eventually, he obtained his own deed writer’s license.
When the Awami League came to power in 2008, under the patronage of the then MP of Jhenaidah-4 constituency, Abdul Mannan, he established a monopoly in the Deed Writers’ Association and the Sub-Registry Office. He became the general secretary of the Deed Writers’ Association and president of the Union Awami League.
By forming a syndicate to extract extra money from land registration, he became the owner of crores of taka within a few years. In the controversial election of 2014, in which Anwarul Azim was elected MP from this constituency, Nasir Chowdhury became even more influential by sharing syndicate money with Anwar.
In the 2016 UP election, he was elected UP Chairman under AL’s “boat” symbol, and again in the 2022. Defying Islamic Shariah law, he married his own two sisters and was living with them together.
He has also amassed vast properties in his name and anonymously in Kaliaganj and neighboring district towns.
The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) filed a case against him in 2021 at the Jhenaidah District and Sessions Judge Court for allegedly accumulating around Tk6 crore through illegal means.
However, for unknown reasons, the investigation did not progress further.
Since August 5, 2024, Nasir Chowdhury has been accused in several murder cases, including the burning of the Kaliaganj upazila BNP office and the burning of the Purosha bus counter. On May 4 of this year, he obtained anticipatory bail for 8 weeks in two cases from the High Court.
The day for surrender in the judicial court was July 13. That day, as the judicial magistrate was absent, it was rescheduled for July 20. Although he submitted surrender papers in court that day, when other accused were ordered to be sent to jail, he cleverly escaped from the court.
Kaliaganj Thana Officer-in-Charge (OC) Shafiqul Islam said, “We learned of the incident through people in the area. But unable to find any family members, we could not enter the house. No complaint has been filed on behalf of the family either. We also could not locate any family members. I cannot provide any details regarding what was stolen, or how much. There are several cases, including of murder, filed against Nasir Chowdhury at the police station. Currently, he has not been granted bail in any of those cases.”
