Educational institutions will be given priority in receiving soil excavated from canal re-excavation projects, Water Resources Minister Md Shahiduddin Chowdhury Anee has announced.

Speaking at the media corner of the Deputy Commissioners’ Conference 2026 on Monday, the minister said dredged soil cannot be kept on canal banks, and deputy commissioners have been advised to distribute the soil.

A management committee, led by the respective deputy commissioner, will oversee the distribution process and prioritise educational institutions requiring the soil, the minister said.

“If any soil remains after meeting such demands, it will be sold through auction,” Anee added.

The minister said re-excavation of canals would also help remove illegal encroachments.

“When canals are re-excavated along their flow, illegal occupants will gradually vacate. There will be no scope for reoccupation,” he said.
