Mahakal Natya Sampraday will stage the premiere of its 45th production, Dr Hahnemann, today (30 July) at 7pm at the Studio Theatre Hall of the Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy.
Written by Apurba Kumar Kundu and directed by Subhashish Dutta Tanmay, the production features veteran theatre actor Mir Zahid Hasan in the title role.
The play is based on the life, struggles and achievements of Dr Samuel Hahnemann, the founder of homeopathy.
It explores his medical philosophy, humanitarian ideals and perseverance in the face of adversity.
According to playwright Apurba Kumar Kundu, the drama is built around the central message: “Human beings are mortal, but diseases can be treated.”
He said, “With the mission of conveying this enduring truth—that people are mortal but illnesses can be treated—I wrote Dr Hahnemann. I am deeply grateful to Mahakal Natya Sampraday, one of Bangladesh’s oldest and most respected theatre groups, for bringing the play to the stage.”
Director Subhashish Dutta Tanmay said the production would inspire audiences through its portrayal of resilience, compassion and the human spirit.
Mir Zahid Hasan, who also leads Mahakal Natya Sampradaya, described playing the title role as a significant responsibility.
“As the troupe marks another milestone in its journey, I have been entrusted with the immense responsibility of performing this solo role. Guided by the director’s thoughtful vision, I am doing my utmost to bring the character to life, drawing on five decades of experience on the stage,” he said.
Following its opening performance, Dr Hahnemann will have two additional shows on 31 July at the same venue, scheduled for 5pm and 7pm.
