The International Crimes Tribunal is conducting trials of crimes against humanity impartially, not with vengeance, and has no intention of rushing proceedings at the expense of justice, Chief Prosecutor Md Aminul Islam has said.
“We are trying to conduct trials not with vengeance, but impartially. In the interest of justice, I do not want to rush to complete trial proceedings. Even if it takes additional time, I want to ensure an impartial and acceptable trial,” he said.
The chief prosecutor spoke as an invited guest at the Annual General Meeting-2026 of the Supreme Court Reporters’ Forum at the Dhaka Club on Saturday.
“Currently, judicial proceedings are ongoing in two tribunals. Approximately 30 cases are currently under trial. New cases are also coming in. However, it may take at least three to four months to dispose of one case. In some cases, it may take less or more time. We are proceeding at the normal pace at which trial proceedings should be conducted,” the chief prosecutor said.
He warned that the number of cases is increasing daily, and there will come a time when the two existing tribunals will face excessive pressure.
“For this reason, there may be a need to increase the number of tribunals and the prosecution team. The number of investigation agency officers may also be increased,” he said.
The chief prosecutor said the prosecution is taking a strict stance to ensure that no complaint brought before the tribunal is vengeful, false, or motivated. Proper scrutiny is being ensured for every complaint and case.
Since taking office, he has sent 5 to 6 cases back to the investigation agency for reinvestigation.
“I do not want any innocent person to be harassed through my hands, nor do I want any guilty person to escape. I will try to ensure that no complaint is vengeful or false. That is, these should not create controversy,” he said.
“We are carrying out our responsibilities in such a way that this trial is never questioned,” the chief prosecutor added.
The event was also addressed by Supreme Court lawyer Shishir Monir and others, with Supreme Court Reporters’ Forum President Masudur Rahman in the chair and General Secretary Mehedi Hasan Dalim conducting the proceedings.
