A confrontation between doctors and Dhaka University students at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) on Wednesday afternoon left several people injured and forced doctors to suspend emergency services temporarily.
According to hospital sources, the incident began around 5:30pm in the emergency department when a Dhaka University (DU) student arrived seeking treatment.
The attending doctors wrote a prescription, but due to a shortage of government-supplied medicine, the student was asked to purchase the drugs from outside.
Soon after, the student returned with several peers and reportedly began verbally abusing the duty doctor, claiming the prescribed medicine was not available outside of the hospital. Tensions escalated, leading to a physical confrontation.
The incident escalated with multiple rounds of pushing and shoving, intensifying the chaos in the emergency department.”
Md Faruk, in-charge of the DMCH police outpost, confirmed the scuffle between the doctors and students.
Additional police personnel were deployed to restore order and control the situation.
Following the clash, the affected doctors decided to halt emergency services temporarily, prompting concerns about patient care at the hospital.
