A local Awami League leader died after falling ill while in custody at Chattogram Central Jail on Wednesday.
Nur Islam, general secretary of the Awami League’s Ward No 7 unit in Mirsarai Municipality, fell ill at around 2:30pm, according to jail authorities.
He was taken to the prison hospital initially and later shifted to Chattogram Medical College Hospital (CMCH) at around 3pm. Doctors at CMCH declared him dead upon arrival.
Senior Jail Superintendent of Chattogram Central Jail Md Iqbal Hossain confirmed the death.
He said Nur Islam suddenly became ill inside the jail and was taken to the prison hospital before being transferred to CMCH.
The jail authorities said the body would be handed over to his family after completing the necessary legal procedures.
