The Dhaka-Narayanganj-Demra (DND) Embankment Project will be handed over to the concerned city corporations within the next two weeks as part of efforts to address the area’s longstanding waterlogging problem, Water Resources Minister Md Shahiduddin Chowdhury Anee said on Wednesday.
The announcement came after a meeting on the DND project held at the Cabinet Division conference room at the Secretariat.
The minister said residents of the DND area have continued to suffer from chronic waterlogging despite the completion of a major project that began in 2016 and ended in 2024.
“Although the project has been completed, its intended benefits have yet to be fully realised. As a result, waterlogging remains a major concern for residents,” he said.
According to the minister, a meeting chaired by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman and attended by representatives from the ministries of Water Resources and Local Government, Dhaka and Narayanganj city corporations, district administration officials and experts reached a policy decision to transfer the project to the city corporations.
He expressed optimism that the transfer would enable more effective management of drainage, waterlogging and waste disposal issues in the area, ultimately improving services for local residents.
The minister also announced plans for a new infrastructure project involving nearly 30 kilometres of drainage network improvements to strengthen flood and water management in the DND area.
“We hope the transfer process will be completed within two weeks and that visible improvements will follow shortly thereafter,” he said.
Among those attending the meeting were State Minister for Water Resources Forhad Hossain Azad, State Minister for Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives Mir Shahe Alam, Dhaka South City Corporation Administrator Abdus Salam, RAJUK Chairman Engineer Md Riazul Islam and Local Government Division Secretary Shahidul Hasan.
