Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) has started training imams and meat processors on cattle slaughter, meat preparation, leather preservation and waste management ahead of Eid-ul-Azha.

The training programme was inaugurated on Thursday morning in Mirpur by DNCC Administrator Mohammad Shafiqul Islam Khan. DNCC Chief Health Officer Brigadier General Imrul Kayes Chowdhury delivered the welcome speech at the event.

In his address as chief guest, the Administrator Shafiqul Islam Khan said participants must follow the methods they learn in the training while performing qurbani. He said cattle hides play an important role in the national economy and must be properly preserved and processed. He also said DNCC has decided to distribute required salt free of cost for leather preservation.

The administrator further said seasonal workers must also be properly trained so they can carry out their work in a hygienic manner. He added that immediate cleaning of blood with water after slaughter can help reduce odour problems.

He also said placing waste in designated bags and keeping them in front of houses will allow city corporation workers to remove them quickly.

Shafiqul Islam Khan expressed hope that the city would be cleaned in the shortest possible time with everyone’s cooperation.

He said, “The city corporation is not only mine, it belongs to everyone. Through collective effort, we can quickly remove qurbani waste.”

In his welcome speech, DNCC Chief Health Officer Brig Gen Imrul Kayes Chowdhury said, “The country’s demand for sacrificial animals this year is 10.1 million. The training has been arranged to maintain the quality of meat and hides during Eid-ul-Azha.”

He added that participants will be shown practical methods to ensure meat quality during slaughter and proper steps to preserve hides. He also requested imams to raise awareness among worshippers in Friday sermons ahead of Eid on waste management issues.

Imam of Baitul Mukarram National Mosque and trainee participant Mufti Habibullah said animals must be slaughtered properly following halal guidelines. He said sufficient time must be given after slaughter to allow full drainage of blood, and washing with water helps prevent clotting.

Participants said the training will play an important role in ensuring proper slaughter practices, preserving hide quality and improving waste management during Eid.
