Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has initiated a special drive against vehicles that have exceeded their designated “economic life,” as well as those that are dilapidated, risky, and unfit for the road.
According to a public notice issued by the DMP Headquarters in Ramna, these vehicles frequently break down on roads, flyovers, and bridges. This creates severe traffic congestion, causing extreme suffering to the public and seriously compromising road safety.
DMP added that the operation is being conducted across the Dhaka metropolitan area to ensure the safe, smooth, and comfortable movement of citizens.
The notice highlighted that, according to a Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) notification dated 17 May 2023, the economic life for buses and minibuses is 20 years, while for trucks, covered vans, and other goods-carrying motor vehicles, it is 25 years.
The police have requested all vehicle owners and drivers to refrain from operating vehicles that have surpassed these prescribed age limits.
The DMP warned that if such unfit or overage vehicles are found on the streets, strict legal action – including fines and vehicle dumping – will be taken. These enforcement measures will be carried out through special drives coordinated by Special Metropolitan Magistrates and the Traffic Police.
The Dhaka Metropolitan Police has sought the full cooperation of vehicle owners, transport workers, drivers, and the general public in this matter.
