Disney+ has cancelled Marvel series Wonder Man, ending plans for a second season despite an earlier renewal announcement, according to Variety.
The streaming platform announced a Season 2 renewal in March, around two months after the show’s debut. However, sources told Variety that Marvel never opened a writers’ room for the new season, and the writers have since moved on to other projects.
Wonder Man starred Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as Simon Williams and Ben Kingsley as Trevor Slattery. The first season also featured X Mayo, Demetrius Grosse, Zlatko Burić, Arian Moayed and Olivia Thirlby. Destin Daniel Cretton and Andrew Guest created the series, with Cretton directing the first two episodes and Guest serving as showrunner.
The series received strong reviews after its premiere, earning a 91 per cent critical approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. In her Variety review, Alison Herman praised the chemistry between Abdul-Mateen and Kingsley, writing that they brought a balance of humour and emotion to their characters.
Abdul-Mateen also earned an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series for his performance. He became the only live-action actor to receive Emmy recognition for both Marvel and DC projects, following his Emmy win for HBO’s Watchmen.
Disney did not release official viewership figures for Wonder Man. The series appeared once on Nielsen’s streaming top 10 charts, reaching eighth place on the original streaming chart for the week of 26 January to 1 February. It dropped out of the rankings the following week.
