Former foreign minister Dipu Moni has been granted 12-hour parole to attend the funeral of her husband, Tawfique Nawaz, who died while undergoing treatment at a hospital in Dhaka on Tuesday night.
Munshiganj Deputy Commissioner has approved her release from Munshiganj District Jail from 6am to 6pm on Thursday, according to her lawyer Gazi Faisal Islam.
“She will be taken from jail in the morning,” the lawyer said.
Tawfique Nawaz died at around 10:30pm on Tuesday while receiving treatment at a hospital in the capital, Faisal Islam confirmed.
The lawyer had earlier said an application would be submitted seeking Dipu Moni’s release on parole so she could attend her husband’s funeral.
Dipu Moni is currently detained at Munshiganj District Jail and is facing five cases involving allegations of murder and attempted murder, according to her lawyer.
During the Awami League’s 15-year rule, Dipu Moni, a joint general secretary of the party whose activities are currently banned, served as foreign minister, education minister and social welfare minister.
Police arrested her from Dhaka’s Baridhara area on the night of 19 August, 2024, following the fall of the Awami League government on 5 August amid a student-led mass uprising.
Multiple cases were filed against her following her arrest, including allegations of murder, crimes against humanity, corruption and incitement to violence.
Several of the cases are currently pending before the High Court in connection with her bail petitions.
