Tawfique Nawaz, husband of former minister Dipu Moni, died while undergoing treatment at a hospital in the capital Tuesday night.
He breathed his last around 10:30pm, Dipu Moni’s lawyer Gazi Faisal Islam confirmed.
The lawyer said Dipu Moni is currently in Munshiganj District Jail, facing five cases filed on charges of murder and attempted murder.
An application will be submitted seeking her release on parole so she can attend her husband’s funeral, he added.
During the Awami League’s 15‑year rule, Dipu Moni, joint general secretary of the Awami League (whose activities are currently banned), served as foreign minister, education minister and social welfare minister.
Police arrested her on the night of 19 August 2024, from Dhaka’s Baridhara area, following the fall of the Awami League government on 5 August amid a student‑led mass uprising.
After her arrest, multiple cases were filed against her, including allegations of murder, crimes against humanity, corruption and incitement to violence. Several of these cases are now under hearing in the High Court regarding her bail petitions.
