Activists from political groups including July Unity, July Warriors’ Council, Bangladesh Islami Chhatra Shibir, Inquilab Mancha and many others vandalised and set fire to the central office of the Awami League in Dhaka on Thursday.
Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) personnel were deployed outside the office around 1:20pm following the unrest.
Political activists from various parties had gathered outside the Awami League’s central office in Gulistan from early morning in protest against the party’s “Dhaka Lockdown” programme.
Around noon, protesters reportedly beat two individuals suspected of being Awami League activists and handed them over to police. Eyewitnesses claimed the pair were allegedly present to cause disruption.
Angry protesters later climbed onto the office building, chanting slogans. During the demonstration, they damaged property and set parts of the office on fire .
Arif Hossain, a leader of the July Warriors’ Council, told reporters that the protest and subsequent vandalism carried out in opposition to the Awami League’s ‘Dhaka Lockdown’ programme.
