We spend much of our lives teaching children how to adapt to the world. How to sit. How to learn. How to behave. How to fit in.
One day, my daughter asked me a simple question: “Why doesn’t the world change the way we want? I want pink sky.”
I smiled at first. It sounded like a child’s imagination. But the question stayed with me longer than I expected. What if, sometimes, the world adapted to us instead?
My days are usually spent solving business and operational challenges. Yet some of the most important problems are the invisible ones, the ones hidden behind numbers, processes and production lines.
Eventually, that curiosity led me to learn more about children living with autism. What I discovered was uncomfortable.
Not because of autism itself, but because of how little the world has been designed for those who experience it differently.
A child with autism may perceive colours, textures, sounds and patterns in ways many of us never will.
Yet the spaces we build from schools to homes are overwhelmingly designed for only one type of user, the neurotypical majority.
The realisation became deeply personal during a regular visit to a specialised school.
I watched a young boy stop at the entrance of a classroom, unable to step forward. The floor beneath him was a polished, high-gloss tile.
To me, it looked beautiful. To him, the reflected light looked like a pool of water. In that moment, I saw something I had never seen before.
We had built an industry capable of replicating the world’s finest marble, yet we were failing to create a safe place for a child to take a single step.
And suddenly, my daughter’s question returned. Perhaps it was time we started adapting our world to them.
That thought became the foundation of NeuroTiles. For six months, our team worked alongside doctors, psychologists, teachers, designers and specialists to understand how design affects children with autism.
We studied colours, patterns, textures and environments. But more importantly, we studied people.
Because innovation does not begin in laboratories. It begins with empathy. What we learned was surprisingly simple.
Calm colours, matte surfaces, predictable patterns and reduced visual noise can help children feel safer, more comfortable and more focused. The insight was simple. Its impact was not.
Because when a colour, a texture or a surface can improve someone’s experience of the world, design stops being an aesthetic choice.
It becomes a human one. That belief led us to create not only NeuroTiles, but also an open-source Inclusive Design Guideline available to everyone.
Because inclusion should never be a competitive advantage. It should be a shared responsibility.
Today, businesses are increasingly defined not only by what they produce but by the problems they choose to solve.
A ceramic tile may seem like a simple object. Yet every product shapes how people move, feel, and experience the spaces around them.
