France coach Didier Deschamps said he had a serious talk with his players at halftime after a poor first half in their 3-1 win over Senegal at the FIFA World Cup on Wednesday.
The French side struggled to find their rhythm in the opening 45 minutes in New Jersey. Senegal looked the better team for long periods and came close to taking the lead. Ismaila Sarr missed a clear chance from close range as the teams went into the break level at 0-0.
France improved after halftime and took control of the match. Kylian Mbappe scored twice, while Bradley Barcola also found the net as Les Bleus secured all three points in their Group I match.
Deschamps admitted his side made several mistakes during the game. However, he was pleased with the changes he made after the break.
Barcola came off the bench to score France’s second goal in the 82nd minute. Deschamps also moved Michael Olise into a deeper creative role, a decision that helped France attack with more purpose.
“I am frank with my players,” Deschamps said. “We didn’t have the best first half, we could do better on many levels. I don’t shout but I do give a piece of my mind, they have to make the right decisions.”
Deschamps also praised Mbappe, who became France’s all time leading scorer with his two goals.
“People will still criticise him but he’s an iconic player, I’ve always said that. With one action he is able to tip the scales and bring his team to victory,” he said.
The France coach also defended Mbappe against claims that he does not contribute enough in defence.
“He’s not here to defend,” he said. “If he wants to miss the first half and score two goals in the second that’s ok with me.”
The victory also helped France move past memories of the 2002 World Cup. Back then, the defending champions lost to Senegal in their first match and failed to get out of the group stage.
France will next face Iraq before taking on Norway in their final group match.
