Ousmane Dembele’s clinical late double extinguished Liverpool’s last hope of silverware this season as Paris Saint-Germain eased to a 2-0 victory at Anfield, sealing a 4-0 aggregate triumph to advance to the UEFA Champions League semi-finals.
Arne Slot’s side produced an improved second-half display that threatened to set up a grandstand finish, only to be undone by a moment of individual brilliance that silenced the Kop and effectively ended the contest as a spectacle.
With Mohamed Salah named on the bench for the second successive leg, Alexander Isak was handed his first start since recovering from a broken leg. The Swede showed early intent, forcing Matvey Safonov into a smart save with a seventh-minute header, but that solitary effort proved to be Liverpool’s only shot on target of the entire first half.
PSG, comfortable and unhurried, controlled the tempo with 61% possession. Dembele was a persistent threat throughout — he almost caught Giorgi Mamardashvili stranded off his line on one occasion, only for the Georgian to scramble clear with an improvised punch, before spurning a glorious opportunity of his own, swiping a close-range volley over the bar.
The holders did survive one anxious moment. Safonov produced a vital stop to prevent a PSG own goal, and from the resulting rebound, Marquinhos produced a superb block to deny Virgil van Dijk from point-blank range.
Slot’s side emerged from the interval with renewed purpose. Cody Gakpo, introduced at the break for the ineffective Isak, tested Safonov in the 49th minute, and Liverpool dominated the following quarter of an hour in extraordinary fashion — registering seven shots to PSG’s none whilst enjoying 75% of possession.
The pressure appeared to be building towards a pivotal moment when a penalty was awarded for an apparent foul by Willian Pacho on Alexis Mac Allister, only for the decision to be overturned on review. Substitute Rio Ngumoha continued to ask questions of Safonov, but the reprieve proved short-lived.
In the 72nd minute, PSG’s first attack of the second half proved devastatingly sufficient. Dembele collected the ball outside the box and arrowed a precise left-footed effort into the bottom-left corner, silencing Anfield in an instant. It was a goal of the highest order — composed, precise and utterly ruthless.
The Frenchman added a second deep into stoppage time on the counter, putting the gloss on a performance that underlined exactly why the reigning European champions remain the most clinical side in the competition.
For Liverpool, it is a sobering conclusion to what had been a promising European campaign. With no remaining route to a trophy this season, attention now turns to how Slot rebuilds ahead of next year — and whether Salah’s peripheral role in these knockout ties signals something more significant about the club’s direction.
