The brand-new Bangladesh Premier League trophy was scheduled to arrive on 17 January. However, the diamond-studded trophy, worth 25,000 USD and shipped all the way from the United Arab Emirates, was only released from airport customs a day later, on Sunday afternoon in BCB headquarters at Mirpur.
A close source told Times of Bangladesh that the Bangladesh Cricket Board was unable to pay the 25 percent customs duty on Saturday, as banks in Bangladesh were closed for the weekly holiday.
Another source familiar with the development said, “Our team had been waiting at the airport since 6.00 AM on Saturday to receive the trophy. But the situation was beyond our control because of the bank holiday.”
On 28 December, BCB’s Media Committee chairman Amzad Hossain had announced that the tournament’s new diamond-studded trophy, costing 25,000 USD, would be unveiled at Sylhet International Cricket Stadium and promised to be the best the tournament has ever seen.
According to sources, the BCB will not display the trophy immediately, and official announcements regarding its unveiling are yet to be made.
