The deadline for submitting nominations in the Chattogram University Central Students’ Union (CUCSU) election has been extended by one day, allowing candidates to file the papers until 5pm Thursday.
Chief Election Commissioner Dr Monir Uddin announced the decision on Wednesday.
According to the previously declared schedule, the deadline for collecting nomination papers ended on Tuesday, while Wednesday was the final day for submission.
Earlier in the day, Chhatra Dal, the student wing of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party, demanded an extension of two days for submission.
In a written appeal, Chhatra Dal said, “We intend to participate actively in the upcoming CUCSU election with general students. But many of our activists, injured in attacks by villagers on August 30 and 31, are still staying in their hometowns.
“At the same time, final examinations in several departments have prevented many from completing the collection and submission process within the stipulated time.”
The appeal further noted that extending the deadline by two days would allow all interested students to participate.
Abdullah Al Noman, general secretary of the CU Chhatra Dal unit, told Times of Bangladesh, “We demanded the extension of time for nomination collection and submission for the convenience of students.”
The last CUCSU election was held in 1990. After 35 years, the CUCSU and hall union polls are scheduled for October 12, with voting to take place from 9am to 4pm.
