A total of 474 students have collected nomination papers to contest various posts in the Chittagong University Central Students’ Union (Cucsu) elections.
On Tuesday, the last day of submission, 377 students collected their papers.
Meanwhile, 589 students collected nomination papers for different hall union positions.
The figures were shared by chief returning officer Professor Monir Uddin during a briefing at the Cucsu building around 7pm.
He confirmed that between 14 and 16 August, 474 students had collected nomination papers for different Cucsu posts.
“Although the deadline was set for 3:30pm, we continued issuing nomination forms until 7pm due to the high demand and enthusiasm among students,” he said.
Professor Monir Uddin added, “We have not received any reports of code violations today. All candidates have followed the rules while collecting their nomination papers.”
For the hall councils, nomination papers were collected from the following halls: Alaul Hall (37), AF Rahman Hall (41), Shahjalal Hall (41), Shah Amanat Hall (44), Shaheed Abdur Robe Hall (37), Preetilata Hall (32), Khaleda Zia Hall (37), Surya Sen Hall (38), Shaheed Forhad Hall (50), Faizunnesa Hall (13), Suhrawardy Hall (63), Bijoy 24 Hall (44), Atish Dipankar Hall (47), and Shamsunnahar Hall (34).
According to the Cucsu schedule, nomination paper distribution began on 14 September and concluded on Tuesday. The deadline for submission is Wednesday, with final candidates to be announced after verification on 25 September at 1pm.
The final voter list for both Cucsu and hall council elections has already been published, registering a total of 27,634 voters.
Chhatra Dal
Leaders and activists of Chhatra Dal, the student wing of the BNP, collected nomination papers for both Cucsu and hall union elections. As per central instructions, candidates collected papers for their preferred positions, though the exact posts have not been disclosed.
Chittagong University branch leaders present during the collection included president Alauddin Mohsin, secretary Abdullah Al Noman, senior vice-president Mamunur Rashid Mamun, joint general secretary Md Yasin, and organisational secretary Sajjad Hossain Hridoy.
“We have collected nomination papers to participate in the Cucsu elections. We haven’t decided on our panel or alliance yet. Remaining decisions will be made according to central guidance,” said Abdullah Al Noman, general secretary of Chittagong University Chhatra Dal.
Chhatra Shibir
Chhatra Shibir’s full panel has collected nomination papers for Cucsu elections. However, they have not disclosed which candidates will contest specific positions.
Among those present were potential vice-president candidate Ibrahim Hossain Roni, a 2017-18 batch student of the Department of History, and Chhatra Shibir president Mohammad Ali.
The panel for hall councils has also been finalised for Alaul Hall and Preetilata Hall. It includes four female students, one disabled Hindu student, and general students. A formal announcement will be made at a press conference on Wednesday at 12pm.
The four female candidates include two from the organisation and two general students. Chhatra Shibir president Mohammad Ali said, “We will formally announce our panel on Wednesday.”
BGCS will not present a panel
The Bangladesh Ganatantrik Chhatra Sangsad (BGCS) will not field a panel for Cucsu elections. However, students wishing to contest independently can collect nomination forms. This was confirmed by the organisation’s Chittagong University branch coordinator, Al Masnun.
Songhoboddho Chhatri Jote
Female students of Preetilata Hall, supported by the Islamic Chhatri Sangstha, have formed a full panel under the name “Songhoboddho Chhatri Jote.” Twelve students collected their nomination papers on Tuesday.
The panel will contest the posts of vice-president (VP), general secretary (GS), and assistant general secretary (AGS). Mijabahul Janat Tarin, a fourth-year accounting student, will contest for VP; Nadia Sultana Tasnia, a second-year Arabic student, for GS; and Afrida Rima, a third-year Geography student, for AGS.
Tarin said, “On Tuesday, 12 of us collected our nomination papers. Inshallah, we will finalise the panel and distribute positions within the next two days.”
Meanwhile, two students submitted their nomination papers on Monday: Habibur Rahman from Suhrawardy Hall (central VP) and Shahriyar Hasan from Shahjalal Hall (executive member).
Other panels have already been announced, including Chhatra Union and Samajtantrik Chhatra Front’s joint “Droh Parshad,” Chhatra Odhikar Parishad’s “Cucsu for Rapid Change,” and Islami Chhatra Andolan’s “Sochetan Shikkarthi Sangshad.”
