Croatia kept their World Cup hopes alive with a hard fought 1-0 win over Panama in Group L on Wednesday. The result lifted Croatia back into contention for a place in the Round of 32 and ended Panama’s campaign after just two matches.
The match also marked a special night for veteran midfielder Luka Modric, who made his 200th appearance for Croatia. The 40-year-old became only the fourth men’s player to reach that milestone.
Panama started brightly and looked the stronger side in the first half. They pressed high and created several chances but failed to find a way past Croatia goalkeeper Dominik Livakovic.
Croatia improved after the break. Coach Zlatko Dalic turned to his bench and the move paid off quickly. Veteran striker Ante Budimir came on at halftime and scored the only goal of the match eight minutes into the second half.
Panama pushed hard for an equaliser and came close on several occasions. However, Livakovic produced a series of excellent saves to protect Croatia’s lead and secure three vital points.
The victory leaves Croatia third in Group L, just one point behind both England and Ghana. They still have a crucial match against Ghana to come. Panama, meanwhile, are eliminated after defeats to Ghana and Croatia.
Modric received a warm reception after the final whistle. Croatia players celebrated his 200th cap by presenting him with a special commemorative shirt before lifting him into the air in front of the travelling supporters.
Panama may leave the tournament without a point, but they earned praise for their attacking style and fearless approach. Coach Thomas Christiansen saw his side challenge both Ghana and Croatia, though they lacked the finishing touch needed to stay alive in the competition.
Croatia now head into their final group match with qualification still within reach, while Panama bow out with their heads held high.
