Ducsu polls unfolds Tuesday. This election is long-awaited and now charged with a unique sense of anticipation. It’s the first major student election since the student-led mass uprising in August 2024.
After a period of immense upheaval and a collective yearning for a more just and democratic society, students are looking to this election not just to choose representatives, but to reaffirm a new chapter for the university.
And the campaigns themselves reflect this profound shift. Gone is the old-school, aggressive politicking often associated with campus elections. This time, the campaign trail has become a canvas for creativity, aesthetics, and meaningful dialogue.
Candidates are shedding generic posters for clever and visually stunning materials. We’re seeing leaflets designed to resemble crisp Bangladeshi banknotes, symbolising a focus on financial transparency and student welfare.
The campaigns are a wonderful variety of communication styles. One candidate has captured attention with a whimsical Harry Potter theme. Elsewhere, delicate butterfly-shaped flyers suggest a focus on beauty, freedom, and a gentle approach to reform.
These are not just gimmicks; they are metaphors. The butterfly represents a hopeful transformation, while the use of money-like designs speaks to a generation that values directness and accountability.
This departure from the norm is a powerful sign. It shows that student politics is evolving, moving away from confrontation and toward a more constructive, engaging, and peaceful form of discourse.
The creative campaigns are a small-scale version of a larger societal hope that a new kind of leadership, one that values ingenuity and substance over brute force, is finally taking root. As students cast their votes tomorrow, they are not just electing a union; they are participating in a pivotal moment for democracy on campus and beyond.
