Liverpool striker Hugo Ekitike has welcomed the arrival of British record signing Alexander Isak and says he is eager to compete for a place in Arne Slot’s line-up alongside the Swedish forward.

The Reds completed the signing of Isak from Newcastle United for a reported £125 million, making him the most expensive player ever signed by a British club. Isak is one of two marquee additions to Liverpool’s squad this summer, with German midfielder Florian Wirtz also joining from Bayer Leverkusen for an initial £100 million plus add-on.

Ekitike, who has made an impressive start with three goals in four appearances for the reigning Premier League champions, is undaunted by the high-profile arrivals.

“When you play for the best teams, you inevitably expect to be competing with the best players,” Ekitike told reporters on Sunday. “Isak is a player I used to watch, so seeing him arrive is a pleasure.

“It is going to be tough competition, but I am going to work hard to perform well so that it is just the coach’s problem.”

The 22-year-old French forward joined Liverpool earlier this summer as their third-most expensive signing and is already proving himself a valuable option in attack.

With Isak’s arrival, Slot now has a wealth of firepower at his disposal as Liverpool look to defend their Premier League crown and challenge on multiple fronts.
