Brendan Fraser is set to return as Rick O’Connell as The Mummy 4 finally moves into production, writes Screen Rant.
Fraser confirmed that filming will begin on Monday, 7 September. Speaking to Canal+, the actor said he had to report to work on Monday morning and spoke positively about reuniting with the stunt team and returning to the role.
He also described the experience as feeling like seeing “an old friend again”.
Fraser will reprise his role from The Mummy, The Mummy Returns and The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor.
Rachel Weisz will also return as Evelyn Carnahan, while John Hannah will reprise Jonathan Carnahan. Oded Fehr is back as Ardeth Bay and Kevin J. O’Connor will return as Beni Gabor.
Michael Johnston and Numan Acar have also joined the cast. The production has not revealed their roles.
Johnston’s reported involvement had previously been described as being in early talks, so his final casting status should be treated with caution.
The studio has kept the plot under wraps. Some reports have speculated that Johnston could play Alex O’Connell, Rick and Evelyn’s son, but the film has not confirmed the character.
Freddie Boath played Alex in The Mummy Returns, while Luke Ford portrayed him in The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor.
The new film will arrive in cinemas on 15 October, 2027. Universal moved the release date forward from 19 May, 2028.
The sequel marks the franchise’s return after a long gap. The original The Mummy arrived in 1999, followed by The Mummy Returns in 2001 and The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor in 2008.
The first two films, which starred Fraser and Weisz, remain the most celebrated entries in the series.
The third film received a more mixed response. The return of Fraser, Weisz and several other familiar faces could give the new film a chance to reconnect with the earlier movies.
Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett will direct The Mummy 4 from a screenplay by David Coggeshall.
The directors previously worked together on Ready or Not, Scream, Scream VI and Abigail. Coggeshall wrote Orphan: First Kill and The Family Plan.
Fraser has also enjoyed a major career resurgence in recent years. He won his first Academy Award for The Whale and has continued to appear in films including Rental Family and Pressure.
For now, the biggest development remains Fraser’s return to the role that made Rick O’Connell one of his best-known characters. With cameras set to roll on 7 September, The Mummy 4 is finally becoming a reality.
