Miscreants hacked a coordinator of the anti-discrimination movement in Dhaka’s Mohammadpur area late Sunday, leaving him critically injured.
The victimIbrahim Khalil Shuvo, serves as the Mohammadpur thana coordinator of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement and is a witness in a July murder case.
The attack took place around 9pm on Sunday while he was sitting at a tea stall in the Bosila area.
Witnesses said four to five attackers arrived wearing burqas and masks and suddenly launched a brutal assault with sharp weapons before fleeing the scene.
Their identities could not be confirmed as their faces were covered.
Local residents rescued Ibrahim and first took him to Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College and Hospital.
Doctors later referred him to the National Institute of Traumatology and Orthopaedic Rehabilitation (NITOR), commonly known as Pongu Hospital, where he is now undergoing treatment in critical condition.
According to eyewitness and local social organiser Arif Ahmed, the attackers arrived in a CNG-run auto-rickshaw and targeted Ibrahim directly.
Family members alleged that the attack took place because he is a witness in the July murder case.
Police, however, said they are examining multiple motives. Law enforcers suspect the incident may be linked to local dominance or efforts by certain groups to create instability in the post-election period.
Mohammadpur Police Station Officer-in-Charge Mesbah Uddin confirmed the incident and said “Police rushed to the spot immediately after receiving the information. A team is working to identify and arrest those involved.”
“The actual motive will be known after the investigation” he added.
