Unidentified miscreants stabbed a police constable during a search operation in the Kutubkhali area of Jatrabari in the capital on Saturday.
The injured constable was identified as Md Shah Alam, 33.
The incident took place at a checkpoint adjacent to the Kutubkhali pocket gate at noon. Police later recovered five crude bombs and one bomb from a bag left behind by the attackers.
Jatrabari Police Station Sub-Inspector Md Sahidur Rahman said four to five police members were on mobile duty in the area at the time. When four youths carrying two bags were passing in front of the pocket gate, Constable Shah Alam approached them for a search on suspicion.
At that moment, one of the youth suddenly took out a knife from his waist and stabbed Shah Alam on the left side of his forehead. When other police members chased them, the miscreants detonated a crude bomb and fled the scene.
Police later searched the abandoned bag and recovered five crude bombs and one bomb, which were handed over to the bomb disposal unit.
The injured constable was first taken to Rajarbagh Police Lines Hospital and later admitted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for advanced treatment.
Doctors said he sustained a stab wound on the left side of his forehead and was undergoing CT scan and other examinations.
Shah Alam is currently posted in the transport branch of Jatrabari Police Station.
