Senior Congress leaders, including Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi, staged a sit-in protest on Tuesday outside the official residence of prime minister Narendra Modi at Lok Kalyan Marg.
The opposition leaders are demanding immediate resignation of the prime minister, Home Minister Amit Shah, and Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan following allegations of question paper leaks and police action against students.
Leading a protest march on Tuesday, Rahul Gandhi condemned the “brutality” inflicted upon students during demonstrations on Monday.
In a post on X , Gandhi said they were seeking accountability for the treatment of India’s youth. “The government doesn’t want to take any accountability nor does it want to have a debate on it in Parliament. PM and HM must resign for destroying the future of India’s youth”, he wrote.
The current wave of protests was sparked by a massive demonstration on Monday, led by Cockroach Janata Party (CJP), where thousands of young people marched towards Parliament.
They demanded a formal investigation into the medical entrance exam question paper leak and the education minister’s resignation. Police reportedly used batons and tear gas to disperse the crowd, resulting in several injuries.
Abhijeet Dipke, the founder of CJP, visited injured protesters at a Delhi hospital on Tuesday morning.
He reported that one female student remains in a critical condition due to the police lathi-charge and vowed that the movement would continue. Meanwhile, hundreds of protesters attempted to gather at Jantar Mantar, despite police warnings that Section 163 remains in force in the area.
In response to the escalating unrest, Prime Minister Modi held a meeting with Members of Parliament from the NDA alliance on Tuesday morning.
Sources within the meeting indicate that Modi urged MPs to engage with the youth to address their concerns. While promising that those involved in the paper leak would face the “strictest punishment” under the law, Modi also cautioned the MPs to alert students regarding “opposition conspiracies”.
