A special musical tribute titled The Legacy has been released to commemorate the 55th anniversary of the historic Concert for Bangladesh, paying homage to one of the most significant humanitarian events linked to Bangladesh’s Liberation War.
Held on 1 August 1971 at Madison Square Garden in New York, the Concert for Bangladesh brought global attention to the humanitarian crisis created by the Liberation War and raised funds for millions of displaced people.
Marking the milestone, musician and arranger Jahangir Alam (Shraban) has unveiled The Legacy, a new musical production inspired by the historic concert.
The arrangement blends Pandit Ravi Shankar’s iconic Bangla Dhun, originally performed during the Concert for Bangladesh, with the timeless Bengali song Aha Ki Anondo Akashe Batashe, featured in a film by Academy Award-winning filmmaker Satyajit Ray.
According to the organisers, the production seeks to weave together history, patriotism and Bangladesh’s cultural heritage while introducing the legacy of the Concert for Bangladesh to a new generation.
The instrumental Bangla Dhun has been performed on the sitar by Jahangir Alam (Shraban), while vocal performances have been contributed by Mahmudul Hasan, Putul Sajia Sultana and Barnali Sarkar.
Produced with the support of Orange Business Development Limited, the music video has been released on various social media platforms as well as Jahangir Alam’s YouTube channel, Covered by Shraban.
The organisation said it joined the initiative as part of its efforts to promote Bangladesh’s history, culture and national consciousness through creative projects, adding that it hopes to continue supporting similar history-based initiatives that combine technology and artistic expression.
Speaking about the project, Jahangir Alam said the aim was not only to commemorate a landmark event in Bangladesh’s history but also to introduce younger generations to the spirit of the Concert for Bangladesh, the history of the Liberation War and the universal humanitarian message carried through music.
The organisers expressed hope that The Legacy and its accompanying music video will resonate with audiences at home and abroad while encouraging renewed appreciation of the historical significance of the Concert for Bangladesh.
