Dhaka University (DU) has formed a three-member inquiry committee to investigate allegations of “secret anti-state activities” against 58 of its teachers.
The university disclosed the development in a press release issued on Thursday and signed by Mohammad Rafiqul Islam, director of the Public Relations Office.
According to the release, the committee is headed by DU Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Academic) Professor Abdus Salam. The other two members are the dean of the Faculty of Science and the dean of the Faculty of Law.
The committee has been assigned to examine the overall issues involving the concerned teachers and recommend necessary action. The inquiry body has already started its work, the release said.
The university authorities said recent media reports claimed that 404 teachers from 22 universities across the country were involved in secret activities allegedly aimed at bringing back Sheikh Hasina, a fugitive convict sentenced to death, and reactivating a political party whose activities are banned.
The reports reportedly named 92 Dhaka University teachers. Of them, the identities of 58 teachers have so far been confirmed, leading to the formation of the inquiry committee.
The DU administration said the remaining individuals would also be brought under investigation once their identities are confirmed.
