A college student was allegedly killed at her residence in the capital’s Khilgaon area, with her husband admitting to the murder, police said.
The victim, identified as Sanjida Akter Maria, 18, a first-year honours student at Lalmatia Mohila College, was found dead at a rented house in South Goran area. Her husband Saiful Islam, 21, has been arrested and sent to court.
Police recovered Maria’s body from the house near Alia Madrasa in South Goran around 8:30pm on Friday. Saiful was taken into police custody the same night.
Maria’s brother Md Chan Mia said she had married Saiful, a Foodpanda delivery rider from Homna upazila of Cumilla, around eight months ago. After the marriage, the couple rented the ground floor of a house in South Goran.
He said he repeatedly called Maria from Friday evening but could not reach her. He then contacted Saiful, who asked him to go to the house and check on her.
Later, relatives went to the residence and found Maria lying unconscious on the floor of a balcony adjacent to the kitchen. They noticed a dark mark around her neck and informed police through the national emergency service 999.
Police from Khilgaon Police Station later recovered the body and took it to the emergency department of Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where doctors declared her dead.
Maria’s brother said her father’s name is Md Mohsin and their village home is in Araihazar upazila of Narayanganj.
In a statement, Khilgaon police said they uncovered the murder within six hours of receiving information about the incident. They added that the arrested husband had confessed to the killing.
Police said Maria was found with jute twine wrapped around her neck, and the incident was initially portrayed as a suicide.
A murder case was filed with Khilgaon Police Station on Saturday by Maria’s brother Chan Mia. According to the preliminary investigation, the killing took place following a family dispute involving Saiful’s parents.
Police said the investigation into the case is ongoing.
