Chattogram Metropolitan Police (CMP) Commissioner Hasan Md Shawkat Ali met with the REHAB Chittagong Regional Committee at CMP headquarters in Lal Dighi on 19 May to discuss collaboration on resolving real estate disputes, said a police spokesperson. The meeting included REHAB Vice President and Chittagong Regional Committee Chairman Mohammad Morshedul Hasan, who presented issues affecting REHAB members and proposed forming a joint committee with CMP to handle disagreements involving members, landowners or buyers. He said, under Section 36(1) of the Real Estate Development and Management Act 2010, disputes should first be addressed through REHAB’s Mediation and Customer Care Committee before police involvement.
REHAB Director and Co-Chairman-1 of the Chittagong Regional Committee Sarist Binte Noor highlighted that several developers operate outside REHAB guidelines, constructing shared buildings without government approval and causing client disputes. He requested CMP support to prevent undue harassment of REHAB members at local stations and proposed a joint monitoring cell between CMP and REHAB, said a REHAB representative. REHAB Director and Co-Chairman-2 ASM Abdul Gaffar Miazi added that developers often face harassment from landowners or influential individuals during projects, resulting in financial and reputational losses, and requested administrative assistance to mitigate these challenges.
Police Commissioner Hasan Md Shawkat Ali praised REHAB’s role in addressing the country’s housing shortage and social initiatives, and said CMP would prioritise resolving issues faced by REHAB members. He instructed that an officer be appointed at each police station to assist with member disputes and urged REHAB representatives to comply with the law and complete construction projects on schedule.
The meeting was attended by DC (Sadar) promoted to Additional DIG Md Ferdous Ali Chowdhury, BPM, and REHAB Chittagong Regional Committee members Hrishikesh Chowdhury, Syed Irfanul Alam, Nur Mohammad and Ashish Rai Chowdhury, said a police spokesperson.
