A clash took place between students of Ideal College and police in Dhanmondi in Dhaka on Tuesday afternoon.
The incident occurred around 12:30pm in the Science Lab area.
Sources said the trouble began earlier in the morning when students of Ideal College allegedly assaulted a student of Dhaka College. Later, in retaliation, some Dhaka College students beat up an Ideal College student.
The altercation sparked tension between the two groups, leading students from both institutions to stage processions in and around the Science Lab area.
Around 12:30pm, 50-60 students from Ideal College reportedly gathered in an alley near the Marriott Convention Centre in Science Lab, apparently preparing for a clash. Police reached and ordered them to disperse, but the students refused, triggering a confrontation.
When police chased the students along Mirpur Road, the students responded by hurling bricks and stones. This led to a chase and counter-chase between the two sides.
At one point, police fired sound grenades to disperse the crowd. The Ideal College students then fled into a nearby alley beside Gonoshasthaya Nagar Hospital.
Dhanmondi Police Station Officer-in-charge (OC) Kyshainyu Marma told reporters, “Students of Ideal College had gathered in the Science Lab area. We dispersed them. During the drive, they threw bricks and stones at police. However, no casualties have been reported.”
He added, “The situation is now under control.”
