City Bank has posted its highest-ever profit, with consolidated net earnings rising 31 per cent year on year to Tk1,324 crore in 2025, driven by strong income growth, improved asset quality and cost control.

Standalone profit stood at Tk1,306 crore, while four subsidiaries added Tk18 crore, the bank said in a statement.

Interest income from loans rose 24 per cent to Tk5,452 crore from Tk4,403 crore, while the non-performing loan ratio fell to 2.5 per cent from 3.7 per cent, reflecting improved credit quality.

Total operating income reached Tk4,888 crore, supported by higher returns from government securities, which contributed 26 per cent of income. Net investment income stood at Tk1,274 crore.

The bank also recorded the highest trade business volume among local lenders at $8.01 billion, boosting fee-based income.

Earnings from trade services reached Tk526 crore, while retail banking and cards generated Tk471 crore. Total fee and commission income rose to Tk997 crore, accounting for 21 per cent of operating income.

Cost efficiency remained strong at City Bank, with the cost-to-income ratio held at 44 per cent despite inflation and salary revisions. Total costs stood at Tk2,160 crore.

Provision expenses increased to Tk815 crore from Tk628 crore, lifting the provision coverage ratio to 128 per cent and strengthening financial resilience.

“Strong income is being generated across all core banking segments,” said City Bank Managing Director and CEO Mashrur Arefin.

“Retail banking and cards have overtaken corporate banking income, posting 33 per cent growth,” he added.

He said small business, nano, retail and card portfolios performed well, while concerns remain over corporate and medium enterprise lending amid domestic and global pressures.

 

He added that maintaining a cost-to-income ratio below 45 per cent for a workforce of around 8,000 was a key achievement.
