All cinemas and multiplexes across Bangladesh are closed today, December 31, as the country observes a day of state mourning following the death of former prime minister and BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia.
The shutdown has brought regular film screenings to a halt, with exhibitors across the country complying with the government-declared observance.
The decision reflects the film industry’s participation in the nationwide period of mourning, which has also affected cultural and entertainment activities.
The Bangladesh Film Exhibitors Association confirmed the closure in a statement issued on December 30, expressing condolences at Khaleda Zia’s death and calling on cinema owners to suspend operations for the entire day as a mark of respect.
Signed by association president Awlad Hossain Uzzal and general secretary Sharafuddin Elahi Samrat, the statement urged hall and cineplex operators to observe the day with “due dignity” by keeping their venues closed.
According to official information, Khaleda Zia passed away at 6:00am while receiving treatment at Evercare Hospital Dhaka. In response, the government declared three days of state mourning and announced December 31 as a one-day public holiday.
Exhibitors have been asked to adhere fully to the directive as part of the broader national observance, with normal cinema operations expected to resume after the mourning period.
