India and China extended warm felicitations to Bangladesh Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman on his election as president of the 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).
In a statement issued by the Chinese Embassy in Dhaka, Beijing said Khalilur’s election underscores the international community’s trust in Bangladesh’s commitment to promoting dialogue, defending international law, and strengthening the foundations of multilateralism.
China expressed hope that the president‑elect will unite member states and reaffirmed its readiness to support him in fulfilling his responsibilities.
Meanwhile, India’s External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, in a message posted on his verified X account on Tuesday, described the election as a significant achievement.
He also said he looked forward to working closely with Khalilur to advance shared priorities and strengthen multilateral cooperation.
On the other hand, Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu congratulated Khalilur on his victory, describing it as a proud moment for Bangladesh and the wider region.
“I wish you every success in this important role,” President Muizzu said in a congratulatory message sent to Khalilur following the election.
Expressing confidence in the Bangladeshi foreign minister’s leadership, the Maldives president said the General Assembly would continue to serve as a vital platform for all member states under his stewardship.
“I am confident that under your able leadership, the General Assembly will continue to serve as a vital platform for all member states,” he said.
President Muizzu noted that the election marked a significant achievement not only for Bangladesh but also for the broader region.
“This is indeed a proud moment for the people of Bangladesh and the wider region,” he added.
Khalilur was elected president of the 193‑member UNGA’s 81st Session in a closely contested vote at UN Headquarters in New York.
Of the 190 ballots cast, Bangladesh secured 99 votes against Cyprus’s 91. He will assume the presidency in September.
The win marks a major diplomatic milestone for Bangladesh, reflecting its growing role in shaping multilateral dialogue and international cooperation.
